Biden Announces a Discounted Internet Service Program to People with Low Incomes

President Joe Biden revealed on Monday that 20 internet firms have agreed to offer subsidized service to low-income people, a program that may essentially make tens of millions of households eligible for free service thanks to an already existing federal subsidy.

“High-speed internet is not a luxury any longer. It’s a necessity,” Biden said with representatives from participating companies, as well as members of Congress.

The Affordable Connectivity Program, which gives $30 monthly subsidies ($75 in tribal areas) on the internet connection for millions of lower-income households, was included in the $1 trillion infrastructure package agreed by Congress last year.

With the new pledge from the internet providers, nearly 48 million homes will be eligible for $30 monthly plans with speeds of 100 megabits per second or greater, making internet service completely free if they sign up with one of the participating providers.
